20th January 2024:

Very clean bedroom with tea, coffee, and biscuits. The breakfast prepared by Duncan was a highlight. Really enjoyed chatting to both of them. They were more than happy to cater off-menu for my partner who's a vegetarian. On the day of our departure, it was pissing down and Maddie was kind enough to allow us a late checkout. If that was not enough, Duncan gave us a ride to the Penzance train station for our night train. Special mention - Maddie's christmas cake was excellent!

Tips:

Talay thai kitchen for affordable, tasty food. Pilchard press alehouse for a local watering hole

20th November 2023:

My partner and I really enjoyed our time at The Painters Cottage. Hosts Maddie and Duncan are a very nice, helpful and friendly couple who gave us a very warm welcome. They love interacting with guests and took a genuine interest in our days, lives and wellbeing. Plenty of hints, tips and recommendations to hand. The Seaview room was nice, spacious and beautifully decorated, as was the whole property. The copper bath was something else! Breakfast was top notch. We went for the full English and smoked haddock. Other options were available. We left with a very warm feeling and will definitely seek the Painters Cottage out next time we are in St. Ives. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Tips:

The Thai restaurant on the Harbour was very nice as was the Porthmeor Beach Cafe. The cinema is a good option for a rainy evening and the Tuesday night jazz club at the Western Hotel was very impressive - especially as free entry.

Within a 15 minute walk of the railway and bus stations, many local restaurants to choose from in the town centre. The St Ives Museum is well worth a visit as is the Barbara Hepworth Museum

17th September 2023:

Very warm and welcoming hosts who are eager to ensure guests are comfortable and at ease in what is lovely accommodation. I had everything I needed in my room and slept well, as the house is situated on a quiet residential road. I enjoyed my breakfast on both mornings with the hot food nicely cooked and well presented. I travelled by train and the close proximity of this accommodation to the station was a major factor when I was looking for somewhere to stay. My two night stay at The Painter’s Cottage was delightful and I have no hesitation in recommending this lovely B and B.

Tips:

If you are in St Ives for a walking holiday with HF Holidays and want more time to explore St Ives itself, then I recommend staying at the Painter’s Cottage before or after your walking holiday. The HF hotel is literally around the corner- I could see The Painter’s Cottage from my hotel room! I deposited my luggage at the HF hotel after my departure from The Painter’s Cottage and went off for a few hours in St Ives before checking in to HF. Very convenient!

Madie and Duncan made us extremely welcome. The bedroom was beautifully decorated and the entire establishment was fresh and clean. Best breakfast in St Ives! We will definitely book at Painter's Cottage again ❤❤❤

Tips:

If you are wanting to wind down and chill/enjoy the beautiful view of the harbour, have a mid-morning coffee at Cintra Seafood Bar. You must also try the best Margarita cocktails as well as the mussels in creamy wine sauce at The Searoom (also has beautiful view of the harbour).

Had such a wonderful greeting from Madie and Duncan, great tips on where to go etc. The place is spotless, breakfast was cooked by Duncan, and it was top-notch and the best way to start the day. St Ives is such a beautiful place to visit and having a good place to stay and wake up in the morning knowing you are going to be looked after just sets you up for the whole day. 5* and highly recommended.

Tips:

Madie gave us a top tip of a place to go and visit after we had done the photo thing at lands end, and that was to go and visit The Minack Theatre, Porthcurno. WOW just amazing and so is the story and history behind its founder. Thank you Madie, that made our trip :)

Breakfast was delicious, fresh fruit and yoghurt, cereals followed by a choice of cooked breakfast with toast and preserves to finish. We will be returning .

You both are the kindest most thoughtful couple, there is. I would give you a 15 out of 10 for every aspect. The friendliest welcome and coming out late in the evening to spare us walking from the train station in the dark. The delightfully decorated bedroom, to fresh milk for tea to choice of decafinated or regular tea, to the comfortable bed with the whitest white sheets and towels, even shampoo etc in the bathroom. Then the unbelievable breakfast, so much to eat, so much to choose from and beautifully presented and oh so delicious. The Cornish china it’s served on. Then the amazing collection of pottery and art to be enjoyed in the house. It felt more like visiting family …. a very special place with special people. I will be back ….. thank you!

We had a wonderful time staying with you and very much enjoyed your company. May your enterprise flourish!

Tips:

We ate very happily at the Seafood Cafe and the Beach Restaurant. If you enjoy drinking good quality local real ale and cider, head for the Pilchard Press - it’s very friendly and has a good pubby atmosphere (and also a pub dog which is always a plus). The Brewhouse Cafe at the St Ives Brewery (opposite the town visitor car park, at the top of the hill on the way to the Bernard Leach pottery) is excellent and has a wonderful view over the town.

15th December 2020:

The Painters Cottage is an authentic British Arts and Crafts jewel; responsibility for preserving its fabric and aesthetic for future generations currently rests in the capable hands of Maddie and Duncan, true guardians of this mid C19th flourishing of decorative arts which spread throughout Europe. To stay here is to imbibe the very essence of intellectual and artistic endeavour that permeates from its walls. If you love this period in art history you will feel rejuvenated after your stay here. Maddie and Duncan are excellent hosts and can advise you on must-see highlights during your stay in Cornwall. Their hospitality is second to none and the location is perfect for enjoying the coastal trails on the doorstep.

Tips:

1. Maddie can provide you with an itinerary of places to visit based upon your interests. 2. Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum were key highlights for me. 3. If you enjoy running, go for a bracing early morning (hilly) run along the harbour to see the sun rise with the cheeky seagulls and return to a warming bowl of porridge and cooked breakfast - all cooked to your preferences.

Painters Cottage is a delight. The room (we were in Sea View) was excellent with a wonderful en suite. The breakfasts were fantastic and big! The whole place was clean and fresh. It was located close to the town centre, a good beach and the train station. And it had parking! But, then, many B&Bs can claim all of that. What sets Painters Cottage apart are the hosts, Duncan and Maddie; so friendly, so helpful, so knowledgeable about where to go and what to see and so friendly. We were chatting with them and two other guests as we prepared to go for dinner and they announced it was ‘aperitif time’ - wine all round and a good chat. But then, a good chat is guaranteed; everything from art or history to politics or food. They are a great double act. It was a great stay!

Very welcoming and friendly. Always helping their guests by suggesting restaurants, routes and even booking tables to ensure a secured spot. Duncan and Madie go above and beyond to give their guests a gold star experience. See you next year :)

Tips:

The balancing Eel for local fish and chips- you can even bring your own alcohol. The Sloop for a good old traditional folk song and a beer or prosecco. Roly Poly for the best fudge in town! If you fancy a walk, take a trip to visit the old chapel on top of the hill. Minick Theatre for breath taking views and a west end performance.

This was my second visit and my husband's first. I came back, because Painters' Cottage is a house on a hill that reminds me of the places people went on holiday to in story books. Each room is a pretty celebration of an individual artist and each breakfast is a celebration of Madie's great cooking prowess. Madie and Duncan make you completely at home, with their advice and practical support. Not ordinary. Extraordinary.

Tips:

This is really handy for arrivals at St Ives station. You can walk the coastline from here, you can walk into St Ives centre in 10 minutes. You can get to the Tate in 15 minutes on foot.

3rd June 2019:

I have stayed at many Bed and Breakfasts over the years, and seldom met hosts as friendly, helpful, generous and even entertaining as Madie and Duncan. They make you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door, and you may even regret having to leave. Breakfasts are copious AND good. The accommodations are fine; as a bonus, my room had a bathtub and a view of the ocean.

Tips:

St Ives is a town rich in history and culture. In addition to the unexpected surprise of a Tate gallery, I recommend a small, volunteer-run museum near the harbor. It documents the town’s history in personal and historic context with photographs, artifacts and stories of the impact of the many shipwrecks on the town and its population. A word to the unsuspecting: if you buy any food at the beach, or for that matter anywhere you see a congregation of Seagulls, guard it carefully. I had just bought an ice cream cone when I heard the flap of wings over my shoulder and before I knew what it was (and before I got so much as a lick), this thief had made off with the ice cream. It was the perfect crime. He got the entire ball; I was left with an empty cone and probably a stunned expression on my face. There are signs warning people about these guys – pay attention to them

We had a lovely stay at the Painters Cottage. Super clean room with lovely quality furnishings and decor with a view of the sea and everything you need; even matching coat hangers which is a thing for me! Quality soap and lotion in the stunning bathroom too and plenty of hot water. Wonderful tasty food served cheerfully by Duncan and Madie who are super hosts. They are very genuine people and very helpful. They were also very gracious when I broke a soap dish. Town is a short hop away so this B&B is very convenient as well as being lovely. We would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone to stay here.

Tips:

We ate a lovely reasonably priced fish supper in the Balancing Eel, recommended by our hosts. We visited the Tate which is fab for modern art and has a great terrace overlooking the sea. The Barbara Hepworth museum is wonderful and definitely worth a visit.
